Speech synthesis
In one sentence
Speech synthesis is the artificial production of human speech by computer. It's the discipline behind text to speech, voice cloning and talking agents, and today it relies mainly on neural networks trained on real recordings.
Also known as: synthetic speech · artificial voice · voice generation · AI voice generation
What is speech synthesis?
It’s the branch of AI that teaches machines to talk. Its best-known application is text to speech, which reads text aloud, but the field is broader: it also covers converting one voice into another, creating new voices and imitating a specific person.
Put it to work
A voice agent that picks up the phone
From €149/mo + VAT
It answers calls 24/7, books appointments and logs every call in the CRM.
See the voice agentIt has changed enormously in a few decades:
| Generation | How it works | How it sounds |
|---|---|---|
| Concatenative | Stitches together snippets of recorded speech | Clear, but with jumps between syllables |
| Parametric | A statistical model computes the voice | Smooth, but metallic |
| Neural | A neural network generates the sound wave | Very natural, with intonation and pauses |
Neural synthesis is what lets a phone agent sound like a person rather than an answering machine.

Neural synthesis usually works in two stages:
- From text to a sound plan. A model decides pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and stress, known as prosody. This is where naturalness comes from: rising at the end of a question, pausing before an important detail.
- From plan to audio. Another model, the vocoder, turns that plan into the sound wave you hear.
Some recent models do both at once, or even work speech to speech. In conversation, synthesis must be quick and start speaking before the full sentence is ready; otherwise the voicebot answers with an awkward silence.
The quality of a synthetic voice is judged mainly by ear, through listening tests. Automatic metrics help, but they don’t replace a person listening and saying whether it sounds natural and is easy to follow.
Example
A winery in Kent wants audio guides in English, French and Spanish for its tours. Recording three professional voice-overs, and redoing them every time the route changed, was expensive. With speech synthesis, the team writes the script and generates the audio in all three languages with neural voices. When a room changes, they edit the text and regenerate that section. For the closing welcome, the winemaker recorded his own voice: the winery decided against cloning it.
How it affects your business
Speech synthesis is now natural enough to answer calls, read announcements or produce training audio. The two precautions are transparency and consent: tell people when they’re hearing AI, and never imitate anyone’s voice without written permission.
In UTIO’s voice agent, voice synthesis comes from US providers under contractual safeguards, and the agent introduces itself as a virtual assistant at the start of every call. If you build software, the AI API offers text to speech in several languages and voices.
Frequently asked questions
What is voice cloning?
It's a synthesis technique that creates an artificial voice resembling a specific person, built from recordings of them. It has legitimate uses, such as giving a brand a voice or restoring a voice someone has lost, but it requires that person's explicit consent.
Is it legal to use a synthetic voice with customers?
Yes, with transparency. The EU AI Act asks that people know when they're interacting with AI and that generated audio can be identified as artificial. In practice, the agent introduces itself as a virtual assistant.
What is the difference between speech synthesis and text to speech?
Speech synthesis is the whole field: every way of generating artificial speech. Text to speech is the application that starts from written text. Some synthesis doesn't start from text at all, such as converting one voice into another.

- Text to speech
Text to speech (TTS) is the technology that turns written text into spoken audio. It's the component, usually a model reached through an API, that gives a voice to a phone agent, a screen reader or any audio generated from text.
- Voicebot
A voicebot is a program that holds spoken conversations: it listens to what a person says, works out what they want and answers out loud. It can run on a phone line, a website, an app or a smart speaker, and with generative AI it handles open conversation, not just menus.
- EU AI Act
The EU AI Act is Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the European Union's artificial intelligence law. It sorts AI systems by level of risk and sets obligations for those who build and use them, from banning some uses outright to transparency duties.
- Neural network
An artificial neural network is a mathematical model made of layers of connected units, called neurons, that turn a numeric input into an output. It learns by adjusting the weight of each connection based on examples.
