Conversational AI
In one sentence
Conversational AI is the set of technologies that let a machine hold a conversation in natural language, by text or voice: understand what is said, keep track of the context and reply in a coherent way.
Also known as: conversational artificial intelligence · dialogue systems · conversational agents
What is conversational AI?
It’s the umbrella term for everything that lets you talk to a machine the way you’d talk to a person: no menus, no keypad, just ordinary sentences. It isn’t a product but a combination of techniques, mixed differently depending on the channel.
Put it to work
An AI agent on your WhatsApp, CRM included
From €49/mo + VAT
It replies to customers on WhatsApp and logs every conversation in the CRM.
See the WhatsApp agentIt took off with smartphones and voice assistants, and language models have made it far more capable in just a few years. It helps to place it next to related terms. A chatbot and a virtual assistant are applications of conversational AI. An AI agent uses it to understand and reply, and also takes actions.

A conversation passes through several layers:
| Layer | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Speech to text | Transcribes what the person says (voice only) | “I’d like to move Thursday’s appointment” |
| NLP | Processes the text: words, sentences, language | Detects English |
| NLU | Extracts meaning: intent and details | Intent: reschedule · Day: Thursday |
| Dialogue management | Decides the next step using the context | Asks which day to move it to |
| Generation | Writes the reply | ”Would Friday at 10 work?” |
| Text to speech | Reads the reply aloud (voice only) | Synthetic voice |
In the past each layer was a separate module, and the dialogue followed a hand-built conversation flow. Today a single language model handles understanding, dialogue and generation together, and fixed flows are kept for the steps that must always run the same way, such as collecting consent.
Example
An estate agency in Brighton gets WhatsApp messages like “hi, saw the flat on Western Road, is it still available? are pets ok?”. With conversational AI, the system picks up both questions in one message, answers from the listing, asks when suits for a viewing and logs the request. If the customer writes the next day “and the one next door?”, it understands the reference from the context.
Conversational AI at UTIO
UTIO’s agents use conversational AI on every channel. The WhatsApp agent chats from a shared inbox and logs every conversation in the CRM; the voice agent understands natural speech, interruptions and accents without making callers press keys, and speaks 26 languages. In both cases it introduces itself as a virtual assistant, and you set the autonomy: no AI, ask first, draft or automatic.
Frequently asked questions
Are conversational AI and chatbots the same thing?
Not quite. Conversational AI is the technology; a chatbot is one application of it. There are chatbots without conversational AI (the menu-and-button kind) and conversational AI outside chat, such as voice agents that answer the phone.
How is conversational AI different from generative AI?
Generative AI creates new content: text, images, audio. Conversational AI is about dialogue. Today they overlap, because generative language models power almost all modern conversational AI.
Does conversational AI understand every language?
Current models handle many languages, but quality varies with the language, the accent and the vocabulary of your trade. Test it on real customer conversations before letting it work alone.

- Chatbot
A chatbot is a program that holds text conversations with people, on a website or on WhatsApp, to answer questions or guide them through a task. It either follows fixed rules or uses a language model to understand what people write.
- Natural language processing (NLP)
Natural language processing (NLP) is the branch of artificial intelligence that lets machines work with human language: read, analyse, classify, translate and produce text or speech the way people use it.
- Natural language understanding (NLU)
Natural language understanding (NLU) is the part of NLP that deals with the meaning of a message: what the person wants (their intent) and which specific details they give (entities such as dates, names or products).
- Speech to text
Speech to text (STT) is the technology that turns spoken audio into written text. It's the software component, usually a model reached through an API, that does the listening in a voicebot, a dictation tool or a transcription service, either live or on recordings.
- LLM
An LLM (large language model) is an AI model trained on vast amounts of text to predict the next word. That single skill lets it draft, summarise, translate, classify and hold a conversation.
