Agentic AI
In one sentence
Agentic AI is AI that pursues a goal instead of just answering: it plans steps, uses tools, checks the results and decides what to do next with a degree of autonomy, within rules set by a person.
Also known as: agentic artificial intelligence · AI agents · autonomous AI
What is agentic AI?
Agentic AI describes a change in how AI is used rather than a brand-new technology. For years AI was treated like an oracle: you ask, it answers. In agentic AI, the language model becomes the “brain” of a system that has a goal and the means to reach it.

See plans and pricingIt isn’t a yes-or-no label but a sliding scale. A scripted chatbot is barely agentic. A virtual assistant that books an appointment is slightly agentic. An AI agent that qualifies a lead, finds a slot, books it, alerts the sales rep and logs everything in the CRM is a good deal more so.

See plans and pricingHow it works
An agentic system works in cycles of plan, act and review:
- Take a goal, not a closed instruction: “book a service for this customer”.
- Plan the steps it thinks are needed.
- Act by calling tools: check the calendar, write to the CRM.
- Observe the result and adjust the plan if something fails.
- Stop when the goal is met, or when a rule says the case must go to a person.
To keep track between steps it needs memory. When the work is split between several specialised agents, it’s called agent orchestration.
Example
A car repair garage in Bristol takes booking requests by phone and on WhatsApp. An agentic system works out what’s wrong with the car, checks whether a ramp is free that week, books the slot, sends the confirmation and creates a task for the workshop manager. If the customer wants a bodywork quote, which means someone has to see the car, it doesn’t improvise: it takes their details and passes the case to the team.
What it means for your business
Agentic AI pays off where there are repetitive tasks with clear rules. The risk lies in granting autonomy too early. At UTIO, agent autonomy is set in steps on every channel: no AI, ask first, draft or automatic. Most businesses start in draft mode and move up one level at a time, task by task. The tasks agents already run in production are listed under verticals.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between generative AI and agentic AI?
Generative AI creates content when you ask for it: a piece of text, an image. Agentic AI uses that ability to reach a goal: it chooses the steps, calls tools and checks whether the job is done. One produces; the other acts.
Are agentic AI and AI agents the same thing?
They're closely linked. An AI agent is the actual system; agentic AI is the approach, or the property of that system: how much autonomy it has to plan and act. A system can be more or less agentic.
Is it risky to give AI autonomy?
It is without limits. That's why you restrict which tools it may use, require approval for sensitive actions and log everything it does. Autonomy is widened gradually, once results prove reliable.

- AI agent
An AI agent is a system that uses a language model to understand a request, decide which steps to take and carry them out with real tools, such as your calendar or CRM, until the task is done rather than just replying.
- Agent orchestration
Agent orchestration is the coordination of several specialised AI agents so they complete a task together: one component decides which agent acts at each step, what information it receives and how the results are combined.
- Agent memory
Agent memory is the information an AI agent keeps so it can use it later: what has been said in the current conversation (short-term) and stored details from earlier conversations, such as a customer's preferences or history (long-term).
- Function calling
Function calling is a language model's ability to reply, instead of with text, with a structured request to use a specific function, giving its name and arguments. Your system runs that function and hands the result back to the model.
- Guardrails
Guardrails are the safeguards placed around an AI model to keep it within agreed limits: checks on what goes in and comes out, limits on topics and actions, and rules for handing a case to a person when needed.
